Following a pair of albums that delved into cabaret and one which paired her with Angelo Badalamenti (an affair that yielded mixed results), the Grande dame of rock & roll returned with her most striking effort in a while. Faithfull, an amazing interpreter of others’ material, co-wrote most of the songs here, including the haunting title track. In fact, haunting is the best way to describe the first several cuts. “Incarceration of a Flower Child,” written by Roger Waters, is emotionally wrenching, and “File It Under Fun From the Past” has an air of wistful resignation. Some of the material wavers a bit (“Marathon Kiss,” the somewhat overly dramatic, spoke word “After the Ceasefire”), but Faithfull is never anything less than riveting. For long-time fans, Vagabond Ways is a worthy addition to her body of work. For newcomers, it’s a suitable introduction to one of the true icons of rock history and one who has become more relevant with age.

Marianne Faithfull pays tribute to England’s great romantic poets on her new album, She Walks in Beauty, which she made in collaboration with Bad Seeds and Dirty Three violinist Warren Ellis.

They’re previewing the record with her reading of Lord Byron’s “She Walks in Beauty,” which he wrote in June 1814. Birds chirp on the recording before piano and ethereal synths provide a bed for Faithfull’s recitation of the poem, which describes a woman’s unparalleled grace. The video for the song, which was directed by Yann Orhan, features a painting by Colin Self. The album comes out on April 30th.

“It’s very romantic, not like you imagine Byron to be,” Faithfull said of the poem in a statement. “It’s so beautiful, and that’s why I like it. I love the other side of Byron, too, but this is really amazing, sublime. And I was very drawn to the ability to do really beautiful rhymes. I think that’s from being a songwriter. It’s incredibly nice. Not what I connect with Lord Byron at all.”

Last week, the 55th Montreux Jazz Festival wrapped up in Switzerland. Started in 1967 by Claude Nobs, Geo Voumard and Rene Langel, the yearly festival was at first true to its name and focused exclusively on jazz performers. However, over the years, it has grown to encompass nearly all types of music and has seen a wide range of performers including Etta James, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Lauren Hill, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, James Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Leonard Cohen, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and many more. It has also proven to be a popular recording spot with nearly 100 albums documenting the numerous concerts. Adding to that album legacy, earlier this year BMG kicked off The Montreux Years series, featuring volumes devoted to an artists’ time at Montreux. The first two featured Nina Simone and Etta James. Now, the next two volumes have been announced and are devoted to Marianne Faithfull and Muddy Waters. The Faithfull entry spans concerts from 1995 to 2009 while the Waters album chronicles shows from 1972 to 1977. Both will be available in CD and 2-LP editions as well as digitally. They are each due on September 17.
