Each member of Trio Tapestry—saxophonist Joe Lovano, pianist Marilyn Crispell, and drummer Carmen Castaldi—has an utterly distinctive voice. Lovano, who has integrated the influence of John Coltrane into his own highly developed sound, is one of the best tenor players in jazz. Crispell, known for her impressive discography and her work with Anthony Braxton among many others, brings a lucid touch and a great sense of space to her instrument. Castaldi is a very unusual drummer—low-volume, spare, free; at times he can recall the late Paul Motian, with whom Lovano also collaborated. (Castaldi and Lovano, both Cleveland natives, have collaborated off and on for decades.)

The great saxophonist Joe Lovano has appeared on a number of ECM recordings over the last four decades, including much-loved albums with Paul Motian, Steve Kuhn and John Abercrombie. Trio Tapestry is his first as a leader for the label, introducing a wonderful new group and music of flowing lyricism, delicate texture, and inspired interplay. Lovano and pianist Marilyn Crispell are in accord at an advanced level inside its structures. “Marilyn has such a beautiful sound and touch and vocabulary,” Joe enthuses. Drummer Carmen Castaldi, a Lovano associate of long-standing, also responds to the trio environment with sensitivity, subtly embellishing and detailing the pieces. Lovano: “We play together like an orchestra, creating an amazing tapestry. I brought in the material, but there’s an equal weight of contribution, creating music within the music, and harmonizing it in a really special way.” Trio Tapestry was recorded at New York’s Sear Sound studio in March 2018, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Azure features beautiful duets by two great improvisers who proved their compatibility long ago. Bassist Gary Peacock and pianist Marilyn Crispell made some outstanding music together in Crispell’s trio with late drummer Paul Motian, but their duo project also has an extensive history, until now unrecorded. With their shared sense of lyricism, their individual compositional styles and their profound background in free playing, Peacock and Crispell are exceptional musical partners. The album, self-produced in upstate New York, home territory for both musicians, contains pieces written by each one, duo improvisations and highly inventive piano and bass solos.

Among the many lauded recordings Marilyn Crispell has made as a leader and collaborator over the years are albums with iconic reed players from Anthony Braxton and Joseph Jarman to Tim Berne and Joe Lovano. Now she has teamed with Yuma Uesaka, a rising talent among multi-reed performers. Their searching new duo album Streams – featuring a mix of free improvisations and Uesaka’s poetic compositions – will be released collaboratively via Not Two Records and Polyfold Music on October 15, 2021, digitally and on CD. Crispell has produced a series of beloved albums for ECM in recent decades, including Nothing Ever Was, Anyway, a classic that DownBeat called “one of the loveliest records of piano music ever released on ECM… stunningly played.” The New York City-based Uesaka – who plays tenor saxophone and B-flat and contra-alto clarinets on Streams – made his mark in 2015 with a debut solo EP, Spear and Shield, which was singled out by Bird Is the Worm for its blend of “power” and “lyricism.” Next, Uesaka’s album with new trio Ocelot earned praise on both sides of the Atlantic, from WBGO to The Wire, along with being featured as one of spring 2021’s Best Jazz Albums by Bandcamp. For her part, Crispell says: “Yuma is special, I think, and we connected musically, intellectually and spiritually. Playing duo creates the possibility for an intimate and very exposed kind of communication. There is no one and nothing to hide behind, so it’s both challenging and exciting.”
