“Little Dark Age” (abbreviated as LDA) is the fourth studio album by the American rock band MGMT, released on February 9, 2018, through Columbia Records. It is the band’s first album of new material in nearly five years, after the release of their eponymous third studio album in September 2013. The album received positive reviews from music critics, who saw it as a slight return to the pop style of the band’s debut album, “Oracular Spectacular”. It peaked at #35 on the Billboard 200.

It’s been nearly two decades since MGMT made a lasting mark on the alt-pop landscape with “Time to Pretend” and “Kids”—songs that are still used as short-hand to define an era, most recently in the movie Saltburn. And 2023’s Just Like Heaven festival exploded in joy when the band performed their album Oracular Spectacular. But the problem with creating such memorable songs so early in your career is it doesn’t just define the time, it comes to define you; MGMT has struggled to escape the mid-aughts electroclash hangover, at least in larger public view. In reality, though, the band fronted by co-founders Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser has released several albums of entertaining music with a particular psychedelic bent. Their fifth, Loss of Life, seems to be a keen student of Pink Floyd and Revolver.

MGMT are back with their self-titled third studio album. The successor to 2008’s Oracular Spectacular and 2010 s Congratulations, MGMT finds Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser continuing to push themselves to expand the boundaries of modern pop music. Returning to Tarbox Road Studios to work with longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann (Co-producer and mixer of Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), Andrew and Ben experimented with various in-studio writing processes, allowing the music to tell them where it wanted to go. The result is a diverse and powerful collection of 10 songs (including a cover of “Introspection” by 1960’s psych band Faine Jade) that directly mirrors the duo’s encompassing surrealist view of the everyday.

On November 11th, 2011, MGMT performed an original 45-minute piece at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York to mark the opening of an exhibit celebrating the artist Maurizio Cattelan. Now, the band has finally released that performance as a live album, appropriately titled 11-11-11. The project, of course, arrives today – 11-11-22.
