June 6, 2024 will be the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings. On this day, Grammy-nominated pianist Monty Alexander will also be 80 years old. A highly symbolic historical concordance, which the great musician naturally takes up, as the name he was given is a tribute to General Montgomery, the famous liberation hero.

The recordings, most of which were made in October 2023 at Studio Sextan, capture the quintessence of two long sessions. We hear an Alexander who is more introspective than usual and sure of the time he needs to hit the right note, the note that can only be hit with a sense of confidence.

He has found partners in the brilliant young Luke Sellick and Jason Brown, his current Rhythm section, he has found partners who can keep up with his harmonic and harmonic and rhythmic digressions, always laced with the intoxicating beat of reggae and the infectious swing of swing.

Monty Alexander – Calypso Blues (The Songs Of Nat King Cole) (2008) MCH SACD ISO

Monty Alexander – Calypso Blues (The Songs Of Nat King Cole) (2008)
SACD Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 / 5.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 56:04 minutes | Full Scans included | 3,94 GB
Genre: Jazz | Publisher (label): Chesky Records SACD339

Monty Alexander follows up his tribute to Tony Bennett with an homage to another classic jazz singer, Nat King Cole. Also recorded in New York City at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the same trio of Chicagoans Lorin Cohen on bass and drummer George Fludas, the veteran pianist seems more in his element with this artist’s repertoire, one that sharply defined his own sound and thinking about popular jazz. Though all of the tunes selected are not so closely linked to Cole’s hit parade songbook, the way Alexander plays them with subtlety and depth does reflect what made Cole the king in the late ’50s and early ’60s. With the immaculate sound and performance by this fine trio–not to mention that they don’t play Cole’s songbook by rote or by the numbers–it’s hard to fault the effort, heart, and soul behind a concept album that should delight many jazz listeners.

The Good Life is the beautiful result of Monty Alexander’s original take on classic pieces from Tony Bennett’s extensive catalog. It’s Monty’s infectious, rhythmic style containing a formidable technique that serves him unerringly without drawing undue attention away from the joyous, soulful, reverent and songful improvisations that spring from head and heart-informed fingers.

It would be nice to say that Ray Brown’s final recording session before his sudden and untimely death in the summer of 2002 resulted in a masterpiece, but although this trio session with guitarist Russell Malone and pianist Monty Alexander is perfectly serviceable, a masterpiece it is not. It’s a very attractive album — Brown was probably not capable of producing anything less as a leader — but it suffers just a bit from Alexander’s slightly sugary style and from the lack of a drummer. Recording without a drummer had been the latest thing in the jazz world for several years when this album was released, but it’s not entirely clear what the benefit of such an arrangement was supposed to be. On this album, the swing standard “Fly Me to the Moon” and Dexter Gordon’s boppish “Dexter’s Dex” would have had much more oomph with a sympathetic drummer on board (though on the latter, Malone’s Django Reinhardt-styled backup and Brown’s inimitable freight train rhythmic drive do go some distance toward making up for that lack). And the mid-tempo numbers seem to plod just a bit as well. But as always, there’s no questioning either the inventiveness of Brown’s solos or the rich sumptuousness of his enormous tone.

Originally released on MPS Records, this is a subtle and fairly creative duet set featuring pianist Monty Alexander and the Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin. On seven standards (including “Just Friends”, “If I Should Lose You” and “Fly Me To The Moon”) and three originals, Alexander and Ranglin listen closely to each other and indulge in some tight musical interaction. Although boppish, the music is not overly predictable; the musicians’ mutual respect is obvious. Well worth searching for.

Not every musician can pull off a program in front of an audience that ranges through a wide variety of jazz styles, but Monty Alexander does so, even within the opener, “On Green Dolphin Street.” Starting this familiar standard in a bop mode, he detours into boogie-woogie until guitarist Ernest Ranglin takes over. His lovely improvised introduction to “Emily” gives way to a much slower than typical arrangement, which emphasizes the beauty of Henry Mancini’s original conception, though with a few changes incorporated by the leader. Alexander likely lifted a few eyebrows when he began playing Scott Joplin’s classic rag “The Entertainer.” After one straight-ahead chorus, he segues into a hard bop setting, trading hot licks with Ranglin. “Chameleon,” Herbie Hancock’s funk masterpiece from the fusion era, is next, but Alexander’s quartet eschews any electronic keyboards or special effects, just digging into it with gusto. The leader also contributed two strong originals to the date. Recorded for the German label MPS, this highly recommended LP is long overdue to be reissued.

Monty Alexander is in top form in this 1974 studio session made for MPS, joined by guitarist Ernest Ranglin, bassist Eberhard Weber, and drummer Kenny Clare. His wailing interpretation of Milt Jackson’s “S.K.J.” could easily be mistaken for Oscar Peterson. But Alexander is hardly a Peterson clone, as his haunting and spacious arrangement of “Summer of ’42” would likely stump many so-called experts in a blindfold test. The quartet’s romp through “Now’s the Time” showcases Ranglin’s fluid solo first before the leader takes charge with a blistering one of his own. Alexander was hardly the first jazz musician to discover the possibilities within Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” but he makes the most of them in a trio setting omitting the guitarist. Following a shimmering solo introduction, he gives it a calypso flavor. He even makes something out of the lightweight pop tune “Feel Like Making Love,” the hallmark of a great jazz musician. The pianist even toys with a bit of boogie-woogie within his introduction to the upbeat treatment of “On a Clear Day.” This well-recorded date includes enthusiastic applause from producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer’s invited guests that never interferes with the performances themselves.
