The tenth album from North Mississippi Allstars was inspired by a forgotten roll of film. Shot by Texas photographer Wyatt McSpadden, the images documented a Sunday in 1996 when Luther and Cody Dickinson showed the photographer around their native north Mississippi – a month later, the Allstars made their Memphis debut, using their father Jim Dickinson’s roots music concepts as a springboard for experimentation, and the rest is history.

Keys to the Kingdom is easily the most personal album recorded by the North Mississippi Allstars to date. Luther and Cody Dickinson lost their father, the legendary producer and musician Jim Dickinson, in late 2009. Along with fellow bandmember Chris Chew, the trio gathered together in the Dickinson family’s home Zebra Studios to record a tribute. The words “Produced for Jim Dickinson” adorn the back of the album Keys to the Kingdom CD music.

Despite the sobering circumstances, the band focused on their father’s motto – “I will not celebrate death” – as the m Keys to the Kingdom album for sale. o for the sessions Keys to the Kingdom songs. They gathered together a slew of family friends including Alvin Youngblood Hart, Mavis Staples, Ry Cooder, Spooner Oldham, Gordie Johnson, and Jack Ashford, among others, to cut a set of original material inspired by old-school Dixie-fried roots rock, Delta blues, funk, and R&B. The album features a single cover, a one-chord blues version of Bob Dylan’s “Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again),” to fulfill a last request by their father. Fittingly named after the Mississippi town in which Cody and Luther Dickinson and Chris Chew all grew up, „Hernando“ is the roadhouse trio’s most personal record. It’s also their finest. Recorded at their own Zebra studios (aka “The Barn”) by Cody and Luther’s father, legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson, and released on their own label, Songs of the South Records, the album has a warmth and earthiness that suggest comfort in their own skin and surroundings.

Most importantly, though, „Hernando“ is the first North Mississippi All-Stars record to break out of the blues tribute-band mold and reveal their biggest influences: ’70s classic rock, ’80s metal, and ’90s grunge, the same stuff every pot-smoking teenager in America cut their teeth on. “Eaglebird” grooves like vintage ZZ Top; “Rooster’s Blues” redirects Jimmy Page riffs through an Alice in Chains prism; and “Keep the Devil Down” is a bluesy take on late Metallica. Herein lies „Hernando’s“ greatest pleasure: a blues roots band staying true to its real roots.

This live album spans the entire career of the North Mississippi Allstars to date, from 1996 to 2008. Guitar star Luther Dickinson and his drumming brother Cody (sons of famed producer/keyboardist Jim Dickinson), together with bass buddy Chris Chew, redefine the concept of blues rock over the course of these two discs, rescuing it from the lazy, third-hand vibe of so many ’70s bands, and investing it with the deep feeling and trenchant attack they learned from both the elder Dickinson and North Mississippi blues king R.L. Burnside himself. They tear up the house on songs associated with everyone from Burnside to Muddy Waters here, not to mention their original tunes.

Luther and Cody Dickinson started the North Mississippi Allstars in 1996 as a loose collective of like-minded second-generation musicians who shared a local repertoire and regional style. Over the years the lineup shifted by design, and each NMA record offered up a different combination of collaborators. Set Sail, the North Mississippi Allstars’ thirteenth album, follows 2019″s Up and Rolling, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for the Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2021. A melding of the new and the old, traditional and futuristic, crafted lyrics and improvisational music.
