One of the first Broadway musical scores to be overtly jazz-influenced was Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story”, a tale of rival street gangs in the inner city. In 1962, pianist Oscar Peterson put his light-swing signature on the already popular score, making it, in the words of one critic, ‘a delight to hear again’ and earning him a Grammy nomination.

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original analog master tapes to vinyl and PCM. The DSD was sourced from the PCM. George listened to all of the different A/D converters he had before he chose which to use, and he felt the George Massenburg GML 20 bit A/D produced the best and most synergistic sound for the project.

Although there are numerous recordings featuring the Oscar Peterson Trio (with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis), the discovery of another previously unreleased date such as this one is welcome news to his fans. This concert, recorded in the summer of 1958 at the Orpheum Theater in Vancouver, Canada, finds the group in top form, beginning with the simmering treatment of “Alone Together.”

In addition to other familiar favorites (such as a gallop through “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top” and a pristine take of “My Funny Valentine”), the trio delves into rarely heard original material, including Peterson’s lovely “Music Box Suite” (also known as “Daisy’s Dream”) and a pair of works by Ellis, the wide-ranging solo feature called “Patricia” and “Pogo,” a turbocharged bop line focusing on Ellis and Brown, with a deliberately delayed entrance by the leader.

In the 1950s and early ’60s, producer Norman Granz perfected the songbook approach to album production by having vocalist Ella Fitzgerald interpret large segments of the standard jazz repertoire. In a frankly stated effort to expand the listening audience for this great body of work, Granz also asked Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson to churn out numerous instrumental songbooks albums under his own name with various combos. By the end of the decade, these included Oscar’s newly reconfigured trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. Like its companion albums, Peterson’s Richard Rodgers Song Book was never intended as a set of exercises in soul-searching profundity. Instead what you get are simple, straightforward, well-played appreciations of great American songwriting. Most of the melodies on this album resulted from Rodgers’ extraordinary collaborative relationship with lyricist Lorenz Hart, and a couple of Oscar Hammerstein numbers were thrown in as well. Those who enjoy this pleasant offering may wish to investigate Peterson’s songbook salutes to Duke Ellington, Vincent Youmans, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, and numerous others.

Cole Porter’s tunes are great enough on their own, but Oscar really opens them up on this set – picking up the inherent rhythms in the numbers and really working them over – in a way that makes the outing one of the most lively in Peterson’s songbook series for Verve! Oscar’s fluid touch on the keys is perfect throughout – taking lots of chances, but always strongly following the melody – and rhythm accompaniment is from the usual team of Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.

With Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, Oscar Peterson reworks Cole Porter and says something original and distinctive. Highlights include “Love for Sale,” “Night and Day,” and “I Love Paris.” –AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn

Pianist Oscar Peterson is frequently astounding on this solo set. After nearly 20 years of mostly performing with trios, Peterson sounds quite liberated in this setting, throwing in some hot stride, unexpected changes in tempos and keys, and surprises whenever he thinks of them. “Give Me the Simple Life,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” and the ironically titled “A Little Jazz Exercise” are quite remarkable, yet Peterson also leaves space for some sensitive ballads.
