Peter Gabriel has been working on i/o—shorthand for input/output—for 20 years now, reworking and re-recording and workshopping songs on the road. The final result is a sprawling head trip: two albums of the same songs mixed differently by, Gabriel has said, “two of the world’s best mix engineers.” Spike Stent (Ed Sheeran, Björk, Madonna) handles the so-called “Bright Side” and Tchad Blake (Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, the Black Keys) is the “Dark Side.” Comparing the two can feel like an Easter-egg hunt; choosing an overall favorite is hard and the best bet here may be to make a personal playlist combo.

Peter Gabriel – Up (2002) [Remastered 2003] MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Up (2002) is the seventh studio and 13th album overall released by the English rock musician Peter Gabriel.

Ten years is a long time, especially in pop music, but waiting ten years to deliver an album is a clear sign that you’re not all that interested in the pop game anyway. Such is the case with Peter Gabriel, who delivered Up in 2002, a decade after Us and four years after he announced its title. Perhaps appropriately, Up sounds like an album that was ten years in the making, revealing not just its pleasures but its intent very, very slowly. This is not an accessible record, nor is it easy to warm up to, which means that many may dismiss it upon a single listen or two, never giving it the time it demands in order to be understood (it does not help matters that the one attempt at a single is the ham-fisted, wrong-headed trash-TV “satire” “The Barry Williams Show,” which feels utterly forced and out of place here, as if Geffen was pleading for anything resembling a single to add to the album). Really, there is no other choice for an artist as somber and ambitious as Gabriel to craft an album as dense as Up; those who have waited diligently for ten years would be disappointed with anything less and, frankly, they’re the only audience that matters after a decade. And they’re not likely to be disappointed, since this album grows stronger, revealing more with each listen. Initially, it seems to simply carry on the calmer, darker recesses of Us, but this is an uncompromising affair, which is to its advantage, sinceGabriel delves deeper into darkness, grief, and meditation. It may take a while for him to emerge from the darkness — there is little of the comfort of a “Come Talk to Me” or “Blood of Eden,” which are immediately soothing on Us — but there are glimmers of hope throughout the album, even in its darkest moments. Again, it takes awhile to sort all this out — to unlock the form of the songs, then their meanings — and it’s such a somber, hushed, insular affair that some dedicated listeners may not bother to spin it the appropriate number of times. But those serious fans who want to spend time with this will find that it does pay back many rewards.

Peter Gabriel – Shaking The Tree: 16 Golden Greats (1990) [Remastered 2003] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Greatest-hits albums are a traditional way of buying time for artists between albums. Peter Gabriel’s, entitled Shaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats, arrived in December of 1990, as he was toiling away at the follow-up to his smash So, which was four years old at that point. As greatest-hits albums go, it’s pretty good, containing all the hits, plus an effective re-recording of “Here Comes the Flood” and a good new song in the form of the title track. While the sequencing may leave something to be desired — it is neither chronological, nor as supple as a good mix tape — it does contain nearly everything a casual fan could want (nothing from the second album, though; both “On the Air” or “D.I.Y.” would have been nice additions), making it an effective sampler.

It is seen as a landmark in the popularisation of world music, and it won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in 1990. It was remastered with most of Gabriel’s catalogue in 2002.

It was eventually re-released in its entirety as a double CD set in 1987. In 2002, a remastered version of the Highlights version was re-released.

In the United States and Canada, his new label Geffen Records issued the album, with Gabriel’s reluctance, with a Security sticker on top of the shrink-wrap to differentiate it from his previous releases, and this title was also printed on the labels. Whilst Gabriel provided the title himself, the album was officially known as Peter Gabriel in other territories. As a result, it is known by fans as Security or Peter Gabriel 4. A German-language version of the album, entitled the Deutsches Album, was released later in 1982.

The album was remastered, along with most of Gabriel’s catalogue, in 2002.

This album is often referred to as Melt owing to its cover photograph by Hipgnosis.

Upon the album’s release, Gabriel began touring with a seven-piece band under his own name.

This album is often called either Peter Gabriel 1 or Car, referring to the album cover by London artist Peter Christopherson when he was associated with the London artists group Hipgnosis. The car was a Lancia Flavia owned by Hipgnosis founder Storm Thorgerson.

Peter Gabriel admits about his 1992 sixth studio album, Us. “I think it had some of my best songs on it.” No argument here: Us subjects, like the deep funky grooves, are all killer and no filler, from the pleading divorced parent to his regressing child on “Come Talk to Me“, the matter-of-fact demystification of personal therapy in “Digging in the Dirt”, to the Biblical allusions in “Blood of Eden” inspired by Gabriel’s study of capital punishment.
