In the current landscape of young French jazz, Pj5 offers one of the most pertinent musical propositions. This is a group in the full meaning of the term, whose identity comes above all from a sound: a certain capacity to densify the derivative sound of death metal, with the shapes of contemplative contemporary chamber music, the borders of minimalism and folk, fuelled with their personal contemporary jazz sensibility and improvisations. A laureate of the ‘Jazz Migration’ program for upcoming talents, composed of five French musicians from the same generation, Pj5 releases a third album displaying a band striving for purity and nuance, energy and intensity in order to accomplish a music capable of moving from epic accents to the simplicity of jingles, from electric storms to delicate sound patterns. Echoing the mysteries and perils of existence, “I Told The Little Bird” resonates with a state of our world that oscillates magnificently between light and chaos, despair and hope, distortion and resolution. Featuring Swedish singer Isabel Sörling and Belgian improv wizard Jozef Dumoulin on the Fender Rhodes, an album in the shape of a sound odyssey.

Beyond any doubt, french band Pj5 is influenced by English and Scandinavian rock, pop and electro bands, as well as the New York jazz scene. The band stays strongly attached to the wide jazz tradition and at the same time offers a modern sound where the melody thread is always running throughout the music. On stage, Pj5 sends out a huge sound, with an omnipresent melodic lyricism, and explosive energy. Feeling very concerned about the current ecological problems, alarming consumption trends and depletion of the planet’s resources, Paul Jarret, Pj5 leader, found a comforting source of inspiration for writing his new album : the trees. In this album simply titled «Trees», all the songs have as a common theme the Tree, symbol of patience and wisdom, incarnation of mystery, beauty and magic of Nature, source of food, material and oxygen, indispensable to the Man who too often forget it. Everything our contemporary civilization shall need : return to some slowness, respect for our fertile but fragile environment, vision in the long term…It is therefore an ode to the Nature and Respect that Paul Jarret offers here, joined by his Pj5 that has matured and has forged a bold and cohesive sound, not so common in jazz nowadays. For this album, this tight-knit group wanted to highlight its strong identity, based on five years of existence, tours and concerts.
