Raphaël Sévère releases a new album dedicated to Mozart’s concerto and quintet, in collaboration with the Modigliani Quartet and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris conducted by Lars Vogt.

“In the terrible period when we were all deprived of culture, Mozart’s music has really been life-saving for me, it has truly filled my life. To make up for these months of solitary confinement, I have worked on several recording and composition projects. But for want of partners, audiences, encounters, I was overwhelmed with a great feeling of emptiness. Music only makes sense if it is shared.”

The present album features a return to the artist’s life. A rebirth. With Mozart.

The Quatuor pour la fin du Temps is one of the most fascinating works of the twentieth century. Its ability to embody many of the historical traumas and cultural revolutions that have influenced our world right down to the present day is unique.

Complex rhythms, refined polyphony and passages of the most extreme sweetness place us before an existential question: how to create a religious and avant-garde work in a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp?

Contrasts of style, mixtures of timbres, and expressive power are the hallmark of Court Studies (2005) by Thomas Adès, which completes the programme.

Three musician friends meet here for a programme devoted to Brahms’s musical testaments. The 20-year-old clarinetist Raphaël Sévère, blessed with a magnificent sonority, and Adam Laloum, whose first disc was dedicated to Brahmsian twilights, together demonstrate that, in the burnished autumnal colours of these sonatas, the composer chose the clarinet to bid a melancholy farewell to the world. Victor Julien-Laferrière joins them for the elegiac Trio Op.114.

Only 30 years separate the clarinet quintets of Brahms and Hindemith; yet these are not just two artists’ temperaments, not two different concepts, not two distinct aesthetics. What separates them is the world of harmony and that of established disorder.

After winning the Tokyo competition at the age of 12 and gaining a nomination as “Solo instrumental discovery” at the Victoires de la Musique, aged 15, Raphael Sévère went on to win the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York in November 2013, where he was awarded First Prize and eight special prizes. Discovered by the general public at the age of 12 on the radio (France Musique), Raphaël Sévère currently ranks as one of the most brilliant representatives of the French school of clarinet.

For more than 30 years, the Prazak Quartet has been at home on music stages worldwide. They are regular guests in the major European musical capitals and have been invited to participate at numerous international festivals, where they have collaborated with such artists as Menahem Pressler, Jon Nakamatsu, Cynthia Phelps, Roberto Diaz, Josef Suk and Sharon Kam. In 2015, Jana Vonášková joined the group as first violinist, succeeding Pavel Hula. She is a graduate of the Royal College of Music in London, and was a member of the Smetana Trio for nine years.
