When Pink Floyd bassist-turned-solo artist Roger Waters announced plans to re-imagine the band’s iconic Dark Side of the Moon, puzzled looks rightly ensued. He even said to Variety, “We all thought I was mad but the more we considered it, the more we thought ‘isn’t that the whole point?'” Waters, who wrote much of Dark Side and is no stranger to controversy, has offered that Redux’s relation to the original is, “Not to supersede it or to replace it, but to remember it, and as an adjunct to it, and to progress the work of the original concept of the original record and all those original songs.” Opener “Speak to Me” now features spoken text that is actually the lyrics from “Free Four,” which appears on Pink Floyd’s 1972 album Obscured By Clouds: “The memories of a man in his old age, are the deeds of a man in his prime/ You shuffle in the gloom of the sick room and talk to yourself as you die/ For life is a short, warm moment and death is a long, cold rest.” “On The Run” is prefaced with “Today, I awoke from a dream/ It was a revelation, almost Patmosian, whatever that means/ But that’s evidently another story/ It began with some standard bullshit fight with evil/ In this case, an apparently all-powerful hooded and cloaked figure,” which was something Waters wrote down after waking up from a dream in July, 2021.

Pink Floyd’s 1979 double album The Wall was that strangest of beasts: a concept album, driven by a tortured rock-star protagonist, so obtusely personal it sometimes bordered on the inscrutable. But history was kind to the Roger Waters-spawned epic; when the communist bloc crumbled in 1989, taking the symbolic Berlin Wall with it, it inspired the ex-Floyd bassist and singer to frame his most ambitious work as another familiar tortured-rock-star conceit: the all-star benefit-concert TV broadcast. The shifting tides of history have undermined much of this remastered, double-disc soundtrack’s momentous context, leaving behind a larger-than-life spectacle that, depending on one’s viewpoint, could represent rock’s most overarching populism–or the beginning of the end. Still, the star-heavy concept yields some unexpected surprises, from the Scorpions’ bracing opening blast through haunting reinventions of “Mother” (Sinead O’Connor) and “Goodbye Blue Sky” (Joni Mitchell)–performances that blunt the oft-suspect misogyny of Waters’s sprawling tale. Bryan Adams injects some vocal fire into “Empty Spaces” and “Young Lust,” but by the time Waters, company, a massed German orchestra, choir, and the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Union reach the album’s crescendos the event has gone so far over the top that it seems like nothing short of a neo-operatic Andrew Lloyd Webber wet dream.

It’s nothing short of remarkable that Roger Waters has built a successful career on obsessive ruminations on alienation, megalomania, and guilty fame, largely on the backs of one of history’s most long-lived arena acts. The musical legacy Waters has shared with “another band” (as he sharply refers to his former Pink Floyd mates in this collection’s self-penned liner notes) has served two distinctly different functions: part and parcel of the latter’s nostalgia act; autobiographical foundation for the former’s ongoing, if decidedly egocentric, Rage at the World. That’s essentially the rationale this live collection uses to lean heavily on Waters’s Pink prime, from Dark Side of the Moon through The Final Cut. And if that frame sometimes overshadows the images of Waters’s solo work–well, no one said he wasn’t a pragmatic entertainer.

ROGER WATERS: US + THEM shows the acclaimed tour 2017-2018 by legendary Pink Floyd artist. As a founding member, lyricist, composer and creative force behind Pink Floyd, US+ THEM Waters presents powerful music in a breathtaking form and underscores his message of human rights, freedom and love. Based on his acclaimed US + THEME World Tour 2017-18, which includes a total of 156 shows for 2.3 million people around the world, the product includes classic songs from The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here and his latest album, Is This The Life We Really Want? Waters insistently demonstrates that he is a musical activist in his heart and one of the most passionate political speakers of his time. He has dedicated his life to fighting those who want to control our lives and destroy our planet. Welcome To The Machine and Another Brick In The Wall Part II are very reminiscent of the gloomy warnings he gave decades ago about alienation, expulsion, greed, suffering, destruction and loss. And yet the songwriter’s humanity cannot be seen more clearly than in Wish You Were Here, because even though he presents a gloomy picture of the state of the world, his message is ultimately a message of hope through unity and love.

Ever since he was a boy, Pink Floyd’s bassist Roger Waters has been haunted by his father’s death in the Second World War. His writing would always bear the imprint of this trauma, in particular on The Wall (1979), The Final Cut (1983) – dedicated to his father – and Amused to Death (1992). This story of a poor soldier who sold his soul to the devil must have struck a chord with him.

Since 1979, Roger Waters has been up against The Wall. Almost 40 years after the release of The Wall, the former Pink Floyd bassist has never fundamentally surpassed his great work, the double album that entered into rock legend but which also marked a turning point in the life of the group that he founded in 1965 with Syd Barrett, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. In his several solo albums, as well as in the great live performances that re-interpret The Wall, Waters has always worked on the same grandiloquent musical and ideological themes. With Is This The Life We Really Want?, his obsessions with the alienation of the individual by society and imminent apocalypse have not changed one iota. Madness like the excesses of our times naturally form a central part of this record, his first proper studio album since Amused To Death, which came out in 1992. Roger Waters, who surely knew that he needed to introduce a little novelty into his creative universe, had the good idea of entrusting the production to Nigel Godrich, who is mainly known for his work with Radiohead. And to amplify the winds of change, the British producer even roused some of the big names of his generation, like the guitarist Jonathan Wilson, the drummer Joey Waronker and keyboard player Roger Manning. But the Waters fundamentals are still very much audible. And his fans, as well as Floyd fans, will soon feel a sense of homecoming. Roger Waters has not revolutionised his art, his words, and even less his personal touch. Instead, he has set about developing the talent for which he is known. And in his register of rock that verges on the theatrical, he truly excels.

In the Flesh – Live is a two-disc live album that captures performances from Roger Waters’ three-year In the Flesh tour.

“My view is that I’ve been involved in two absolutely classic albums – The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall,” Waters told Classic Rock. “And if you haven’t got Amused to Death, you haven’t got the full set. So this album – the live one, which pulls together songs from all three albums – hopefully redresses the balance.”[citation needed] The album features selected songs from a number of Pink Floyd albums, Waters’ solo efforts and a new song “Each Small Candle”.
