Following a 20th anniversary reunion tour in 1989 to promote Viva Santana!, Carlos Santana reorganized the band as a sextet and recorded Spirits Dancing in the Flesh, Santana’s 15th and final studio album for Columbia Records. It was an unusually eclectic collection, featuring songs by Curtis Mayfield (“Gypsy Woman”), the Isley Brothers (“Who’s That Lady”), and Babatunde Olatunji (“Jin-Go-Lo-Ba”). For all those influences, it was more of a straightforward, guitar-heavy rock album than usual. Coming more than three years after Santana’s last new album, Freedom, it sold to the band’s core audience only, reaching number 85. –William Ruhlmann, AllMusic

Beyond Appearances is the thirteenth studio album by Santana, released in 1985 (see 1985 in music). The album took seven months to make, and (apart from Carlos Santana himself) involved a completely different line-up from Santana’s previous album (released two and a half years earlier). It was firmly in the style of the 1980s, making much use of synthesizers and drum machines. Beyond Appearances performed relatively poorly, reaching only fifty on the Billboard album chart; one of its tracks, “Say It Again”, reached number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (though it performed better on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, reaching number fifteen).

The show features most of the tracks from their classic 1973 album Love Devotion Surrender mixed in with a wealth of other material. The evening was a showcase of supreme musical virtuosity and spirituality and typified the approach of these two great artists. It is certainly a performance not to be missed.

antana is a Latin rock band. Founded in San Francisco during the late 1960s, it is based around the compositions and playing of lead guitarist and founder Carlos Santana. The band first came to widespread public attention when their performance of their Latin rock song “Soul Sacrifice” at Woodstock in 1969 provided a contrast to other acts on the bill. This exposure helped propel their first album, also named Santana, into a hit, followed in the next two years by the successful Abraxas and Santana III.
In the years that followed lineup changes were common. Carlos Santana’s increasing involvement with guru Sri Chinmoy took the band into more esoteric music, though never quite losing its initial Latin influence.
In 1998, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Carlos Santana, Jose Chepito Areas, David Brown, Gregg Rolie, Mike Carabello and Michael Shrieve being honored.
The band has earned eight Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, the latter all in 2000. Carlos also won Grammy Awards as a solo artist in 1989 and 2003. Santana has sold more than 90 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time.

Nobody could have predicted the success of the star-studded Supernatural in 1999, but it revitalized the career of Santana, plus Clive Davis, who cooked up the whole idea of the comeback in the first place. Given its blockbuster status, a sequel that followed the same blueprint was inevitable, which is exactly what 2002’s Shaman is. If anything, there’s even less Carlos Santana here, proving that he and Davis are among those that believe that Supernatural was a success because of Rob Thomas and “Smooth,” not the typically tasteful, excellent guitar playing. And, no surprise, Thomas has a strong presence here even if he doesn’t sing. He writes two songs, flexing his muscles as a neo-soul songwriter (not badly, either, on cuts sung by Musiq and Seal), and providing the template for all the guests here: they want to launch a new stage of their career, finding a wider audience. Outside of Seal (who has a comeback of his own to launch) and Placido Domingo (who does these things because he can), everybody here has hearts to win and something to prove, and they do a mixed job of it. P.O.D. falls on its face with the embarrassing “America,” but Chad Kroeger far outshines anything he’s done with a surprisingly subtle and soulful “Why Don’t You & I,” easily better than anything by Nickelback. But this points out the problem on the record — each song is tailored to the strengths of the lead singer, not the strengths of Santana, who’s left with piddly, forgettable instrumental interludes and playing endless lines beneath the vocal melodies. Who can blame him? It’s the only chance he really gets to play on this album. On the whole, it holds together no better or no worse than Supernatural — it’s the same record, essentially. True, there wasn’t anything as awful as “America” or the foolish aural press release “Since Supernatural,” but there was nothing as joyous and wonderful as the Michelle Branch-sung “The Game of Love.” Written by the team behind the New Radicals’ modern pop classic “You Get What You Give,” it’s every bit as soaring melodic and irresistible; it may not be Santana — it sounds even less like Santana than “Smooth” — but it’s perfect pop, the best pop single of 2002, for reasons that have nothing to do with Santana. Santana Greatest Hits: Live at Montreux (2011) Blu-ray 1080i AVC DTS-HD MA 5.1

Santana Greatest Hits: Live at Montreux 2011 is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Eagle Rock Entertainment with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1. These Montreux concerts typically look very sharp on Blu-ray, at least those from the last couple of years or so, and this Santana outing is no exception. Aside from some very minor posterizing which crops up due to some incredibly robust red and blue lighting, which bathes the entire stage in overwrought hues, this is a very sharp and appealing looking high definition presentation which pops especially well in the many close-ups which capture Carlos and his incredible band in a very up close and personal way. Fine detail is exceptional in these close-ups, so much so that you can virtually count the freckles on Cindy Blackman Santana’s face during her guest appearance on a couple of numbers. Midrange and far range shots are a tad murky by comparison, and some of the extremely wide angle shots which capture the entire huge audience are hampered by a lack of shadow detail in the backgrounds if not outright crush.
