Blackout was the Scorpions’ first majorly successful album, due to its clever balance of pop/rock (the title track), power ballads (“When the Smoke Is Going Down”), and catchy heavy metal (“Dynamite,” “No One Like You”). Vocalist Klaus Meine had a throat operation prior to the record’s release, and surprisingly, his voice sounds more melodic and lively than ever. The rest of the band sounds great as well, and the album is highlighted by the fast-paced performances of guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs. Blackout has arguably been called the Scorpions’ best record ever, and that statement is not unjust — it has more energy than anything else they have ever released.

On the heels of Metallica’s similarly conceived S&M comes the Scorpions’ Moment of Glory, a presentation of past favorites (plus three new songs) with full orchestral backing courtesy of the Berlin Philharmonic. The rock instrumentation blends in best on the ballads, but some of the up-tempo rockers can also be pretty exciting, if a little bombastic. That said, the Scorpions’ music isn’t always complex enough to suggest interesting ways of augmenting the original arrangements – but since this is more a specialty item for diehards in the first place, that won’t likely matter in the end. Some fans may be disappointed that Klaus Meine gives way to guest vocalists on a couple of tunes, but overall, this is a variation on the Scorpions’ signature sound that loyalists will probably enjoy quite a bit.

Recorded just before the band began cranking out their earliest hits on classic albums like Lovedrive and Animal Magnetism, Virgin Killer is the first of four studio releases that really defined the Scorpions and their urgent metallic sound that was to become highly influential. While there are no tracks recognizable to the casual fan like “Blackout” and “Another Piece of Meat,” on Virgin Killer, serious fans of the group treasure this 1977 collection. Some all-time Scorpions standouts like “Pictured Life” and the title cut have all the necessary guitar chops and fierce falsetto melodies to get even the most jaded heavy metal old-timer teary eyed with nostalgia. Perhaps Virgin Killer isn’t as focused as the brilliant Lovedrive or as tuneful as either Animal Magnetism or Blackout, but the group’s trademark enthusiasm (the single element that separated and defined them, especially during the occasionally over-serious days of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and dexterity shines through on this near-historic heavy metal collection. – Vincent Jeffries

The Scorpions’ third release, In Trance, continues to display their high-energy music, which is impossible to ignore. With the eyebrow-lifting “Dark Lady” as the opening track, the album immediately captures the listener’s attention and keeps it all the way until the end. The interesting title track is clearly the best song of the album, but singles such as the fast-paced “Robot Man” and the hard-rocking “Top of the Bill” also stand out as highlights. Excellent singing and powerful music make this the best Scorpions recording working with Uli Jon Roth. – Barry Weber

2013 live release from the iconic German rockers. On September 11 and 12, 2013, the Scorpions played two fantastic acoustic sets in the Lycabettus theatre of Athens. The open-air theatre, which was designed by the Greek architect Takis Zenetos in 1965 is situated on Mount Lycabettus, at 300m height, and offers an impressive view of the Greek metropolis. The show captivates with its numerous intimate moments and infectious adrenaline rushes (such as during a percussion solo). And there are even more nuggets from the sheer endless stock of hits as well as a few welcome surprises to dazzle the connoisseur. It is difficult to pinpoint single highlights, but what can be stated with certainty is that the Scorpions evidently enjoyed this musical rollercoaster ride through their own history. It is equally obvious that both rock songs and power ballads display their class and style even when rendered as acoustic versions. The melodies maintain their timeless compositional appeal and the quality of the performance proves time and again that the Scorpions are blessed.

Known best for their 1984 anthem “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and the 1990 ballad “Wind of Change,” German rockers the Scorpions have sold over 22 million records, making them one of the most successful rock bands to ever come out of Continental Europe. Formed in 1969 by Rudolf Schenker, the original lineup consisted of rhythm guitarist/vocalist Schenker, lead guitarist Karl-Heinz Follmer, bassist Lothar Heimberg, and drummer Wolfgang Dziony. In 1971, Schenker’s younger brother Michael joined the band to play lead guitar and good friend Klaus Meine became the new vocalist. The group recorded Lonesome Crow in 1972, which was used as the soundtrack to the German movie Das Kalte Paradies. Although they failed to get into the public’s eye, the early incarnation of ’70s rock band UFO noticed Michael Schenker’s guitar playing and hired him as their lead guitarist; Michael, therefore, would leave the band in 1973. Guitarist Uli Jon Roth replaced him, and under his guidance the group released four consecutive albums under the RCA record label: Fly to the Rainbow (1974), In Trance (1975), Virgin Killer (1976), and Taken by Force (1977).
