It goes without saying that the global metal scene would not be the same without Sepultura. For 35 years now, the Brazilian icons are not only a band revered worldwide; they have been, are and forever will be at the very forefront of thrash metal, trailblazing ever since they released their long-since legendary debut album Morbid Visions in 1986. While quickly establishing themselves as leaders of the second wave of thrash already in the late eighties, to this day they never came even close to stagnation. Quadra, their mighty new undertaking, is proof of a will unbroken, a thirst unquenched and a quality so staggeringly high it’s a wonder this band doesn’t implode. Now, three albums deep into what may very well be their strongest incarnation yet – uniting the talents of old-school members Andreas Kisser (guitars, vocals) and Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr. (bass), vocal force of nature Derrick Leon Green (vocals) and drummer Eloy Casagrande – Sepultura is an unleashed power to be reckoned with, uniting bucketloads of experience and youthful vigour in a totally revived way.

“Machine Messiah” is the fourteenth studio album by the Brazilian metal band Sepultura. The band recorded Machine Messiah in Sweden with producer Jens Bogren. Machine Messiah is the band’s first studio album in over three years, marking the longest gap between two studio albums in their career. The band stated the concept of the album, saying, “The main inspiration around Machine Messiah is the robotization of our society nowadays. The concept of a God Machine who created humanity and now it seems that this cycle is closing itself, returning to the starting point. We came from machines and we are going back to where we came from. The messiah, when he returns, will be a robot, or an humanoid, our biomechanical savior”.

Sepultura – Chaos A.D. (Remastered) (1993/2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

“Chaos A.D.” is the fifth studio album by Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura. Although the album is considered Thrash Metal, it saw a stylistic departure from the band’s earlier style, by incorporating a new groove metal sound. In 2017, it was ranked 29th on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time”.

Sepultura truly claimed its place on the heavy-metal world stage with 1993’s „Chaos A.D.“, a focused, dose-of-thunder release that crystallized the Brazilian outfit’s aesthetic. Propulsive rhythms, gravel-voice shouting, and epic guitar riffs drenched in nerve-fraying distortion come together in a perfect marriage here. But while Sepultura’s music was originally inspired by the likes of Metallica and Slayer, „Chaos A.D.“ feels considerably more stripped-down than the music of these mentors–progressive changes and long, showy solos are few and far between. Instead, Sepultura emphasizes fierce, straightforward structures that have more in common with hardcore’s no-nonsense approach than metal’s glamorous flash. The band’s lyrics take a distinctly political turn on „Chaos A.D.“, addressing issues such as state-generated war (“Refuse/Resist”) and biotechnology (“Biotech Is Godzilla”–with lyrics written by Jello Biafra). The weightiness of the themes is well suited to the crushing, apocalyptic sound of the quartet (Igor Cavalera’s drumming alone could bulldoze a medium-sized city), and the intensity of the performances throughout should appeal to fans of both traditional and hardcore metal. This is an essential album from one of the most important aggressive rock bands of the 1990s.

Sepultura – Arise (1991/2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

“Arise was the seed that exploded on Roots,” Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser thoughtfully notes. Those of you keeping score will note that this is Sepultura’s third dance with our Hall of Fame, a dB first. As for 1991’s Arise lighting the charge that blew five years and two albums later on Roots, well, you could interpret that in a variety of ways: vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera was starting to test songwriting solitude; native Brazilian music and percussion was being explored and incorporated; the band transformed from “third world posse” into a finely honed professional machine. The commercial success of Arise not only made them darlings around the Roadrunner office, but presented them with a license to rewrite the rules.
