This unique quartet came into being through an encounter the Chanteurs d’Oiseaux – Jean Boucault and Johnny Rasse – had with the pianist Shani Diluka and the violinist Genèvieve Laurenceau. Their album evidences the extraordinarily deep and long-lasting tie that links music to the song of birds.

In all its infinite variety, birdsong – an age-old and limitless well of inspiration, a source of pure poetry and symbol of freedom – offers a whole new way of listening to the great composers.

Echoing Mozart, Casals, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Grieg, Messiaen, Tchaikovsky and many others, nightingales, chaffinches, warblers and blackbirds add their own music to The Symphony of The Birds.

Shani Diluka takes us to the less explored path of the filial, even spiritual, relationship which unites Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Mozart.

Shani delves into this connection on a modern piano and gives us a unique interpretation by featuring two works recorded on the copy of the 1790 Walter, Mozart’s favourite piano.

Shani outlines the issue of pitch and temperaments as the meaningful symbols of an era – art and music indeed reveal the remote secrets of our human capacity.

Exploring the quintessence of musical folklore so dear to his heart, in the form of his still neglected ländler and waltzes, right up to the last notes of the Sonata in B flat on the eve of his death, Schubert takes us from the simplest language to the innermost reaches of the soul. One can hardly dream of a more appropriate pianist than Shani Diluka to guide us through these works and offer us an interpretation shifting between shadows and light, touching on the mystery of the invisible, as Novalis said. Here she performs some of the Viennese composer’s finest pieces.

There is an indisputable historical link between Beethoven and Indian culture: in his quest to fathom the depths of this culture, and captivated by the translation of the Upanishads that was published in Germany in 1816, he immersed himself well and truly in these ancient texts, just as Schopenhauer did, or like Goethe discovering the great Persian poet Hafez when writing his last major collection, the ‘West-Eastern Divan’. We see here a mystical Beethoven, scrutinising man and the cosmos and especially curious about other cultures.

Here, Shani Diluka pays homage to the great American minimalist masters of the second half of the 20th century: Moondog, John Adams, Philipp Glass, Julias Eastman. Behind the Pulse title, we have identified a discreet nod to the eponymous work of Steve Reich, leader of the genre and yet curiously absent from the selection. But Pulse is also this notion of an uninterrupted beat, that of the heart, the heart of a country, grappling with its contradictory rhythms: from the frenzy of megacities to time suspended in wide-open spaces. Pianist Shani Diluka takes a tender and fascinating look at these soundscapes which showcase the splendours of a continent-nation (Danny Boy, Shenandoah) and the glaring traumas of its History (The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc) – Pierre Lamy
