Shelly Manne and Norman Granz are two names that one doesn’t hear in the same sentence very often. Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic tours tended to have a lot of flashy solos, and Manne wasn’t about flashiness; he was a subtle drummer who knew the value of economy. Nonetheless, Granz admired Manne’s playing – and even though Manne had reservations about taking part in J.A.T.P., Granz managed to persuade him to join J.A.T.P. on a tour of Europe in 1960. Recorded in Zurich, Switzerland, and Copenhagen, Denmark, Yesterdays finds Manne leading a diverse yet cohesive quintet that also includes trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, pianist Russ Freeman, and bassist Monty Budwig.

Influential and innovative jazz pianist Bill Evans took time off from his regular trio to record Empathy with drummer Shelly Manne (who shares equal billing) and bassist Monty Budwig. Critics noted that the impromptu collaboration seemed to loosen Evans up, inspiring a lighter, freer and more relaxed performance on this album than on his previous recordings with his usual bandmates.

This unusual set has five selections from a date featuring the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Shelly Manne. Both “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Cherokee” find the group at times playing two tempos at once (Manne sticks to double-time throughout “Cherokee”), and showing that they’d heard some of the avant-garde players. The most swinging piece, “Avalon,” was previously available only on a sampler, while “Me and Some Drums” features Hawkins and Manne in a very effective duet; the veteran tenor makes his only recorded appearance on piano during the first half. This date is rounded off by a pair of trio features for Eddie Costa (with Duvivier and Manne); one song apiece on vibes and drums. A very interesting set with more than its share of surprises.

Released as part of the Acoustic Sounds Series celebrating 70 years of Contemporary Records, Shelly Manne & Friends’ My Fair Lady is the first album to ever consist of jazz versions of songs from just a single Broadway musical. First released in 1956 and recorded by legendary engineer Roy DuNann, this new edition features remastered audio from the original tapes.

My Fair Lady, recorded by “Shelly Manne & His Friends,” was released in 1956 by Contemporary Records. Shelly Manne and his Friends bassist Leroy Vinnegar and the once and future classical pianist André Previn had recorded a trio album before this one (Shelly Manne and Friends) but My Fair Lady was the first and biggest-selling of the jazz versions of Broadway shows, TV themes, and film soundtracks later recorded by the trio. It remains a true classic to this day. Tracks include “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Your Face,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.”

Empathy is the album that resulted when the Bill Evans Trio and Shelly Manne & His Men were sharing the bill at New York’s Village Vanguard. A session at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio was set up, and the trio of Evans, Manne, and Monty Budwig (Manne’s bass player) recorded the album. Because all of the musicians were out of their regular working ensembles, they felt more free to play around with the music and the resulting music is light, free, and relaxed. Songs recorded include Irving Berlin’s “The Washington Twist” and “Let’s Go Back to the Waltz”.
