The Leuven Chansonnier (1470–1475) includes not only fifty compositions by such leading 15th century Franco-Flemish names as Johannes Ockeghem, Antoine Busnoys and Firminus Caron but also twelve newly rediscovered works that exist in no other source. The Ensemble Sollazzo here brings a selection of this music to life in an interpretation that is both brilliant and refreshing.

Sollazzo Ensemble makes its recording debut following its prizewinning performance at the highly respected biennial York Early Music International Young Artists Competition.

Comprising sopranos Perrine Devillers and Yukie Sato, tenor Vivien Simon, medieval fiddles Anna Danilevskaia and Sophia Danilevskaia, and harpist Vincent Kibildis this vibrant young ensemble offers a fresh perspective on mediaeval repertoire.

On Parle qui veut the performers embrace the exuberant style of flourishing melodies which was fashionable in the north of Italy in the fourteenth century.

In contrast, a different kind of expressivity is required for the sober and succinct aesthetic of the works with French provenance.

Sollazzo creates a pure, bright sound, enhanced by the songs’ incredibly open textures and the use of the rarely heard Pythagorean temperament.

All in all, this represents a remarkable debut.

This recording by the Solazzo Ensemble isn’t just one to play “en seumeillant” – “while dreaming” – but also “en fumant” – while smoking – as it also contains the smoke-themed Fumeux fume and Puisque je sui fumeux – a whole collection of songs thought of as “medieval”, but which in fact come from a very wide variety of repertoires, from Italy and France, running from the 13th to the early 15th centuries. Two centuries of splendour, change – and sometimes extravagance, as the secret society of the Fumeurs (the originators of the smokier tracks on this album) were known for their eccentricities – as the smoky pieces here will surely prove. The understanding of death also provides space for musical and poetic interpretations, not exclusively religious ones: some portray death as a kind of endless dream. The “medieval” voices of the Swiss Solazzo Ensemble are accompanied here by a range of instruments from the period: hurdy-gurdies, vielles (no relation to the hurdy-gurdy: the vielle is a primitive medieval ancestor of the viola and violin) and harps.
