The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and its Music Director Rafael Payare extend their Pentatone discography with a recording of Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben and Gustav Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder, sung by superstar soprano Sonya Yoncheva. The pairing of works may seem odd at first, with Strauss at his most exuberant and Mahler at his most introspective. They share, however, a deeply personal and autobiographical approach by two giants of fin-de-siècle music coming to terms with the world they lived in and their place in it. After their acclaimed recording of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, Payare and the orchestra further explore this late-Romantic repertoire that fits them like a glove.

For huge fans of Yoncheva, this is a beautiful collection of some of the Verdian soprano’s finest moments. Half of the tracks are great hits: Otello and his famous prayer, Don Carlo, Nabucco, Il Trovatore and La forza del destino, the other half being made up of lesser-known works such as Stiffelio, Luisa Miller or Attila. The Bulgarian soprano (note that she was born in 1981, and is already a star at the peak of her career) demonstrates at once the warmth of her voice, an instrument fallen from heaven, with her mezzo tones and the range of her great lyrical voice, but also her bel canto vocal technique which is deployed to great effect in this brilliant repertoire. More purist listeners might have issues with her way of making her attacks “from below” in the Italian style, but that is her stylistic and technical choice, and it is a choice shared by a good proportion of lyrical singers who work with the Italian repertoire. This studio recording was created in 2017.

This project was born out of a meeting and from the dramatic pandemic that hit the world in the spring of 2020. Sonya Yoncheva had been thinking about this programme for years, but her meeting with Leonardo Garcia Alarcon for a production of L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Opéra de Genève crystallised and modified her original idea. The two musicians then thought of a musical dialogue between the Baroque period and ours. The works are presented so that each reveals something of each other. For Sonya Yoncheva, this album was conceived as a call for a renaissance. The programme is like an exploration of the deepest corners of the human psyche through music of a high expressive density.

The Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva is a rising star in the opera world. First prize-winner at Placido Domingo’s Operalia competition in 2010, she made her Met Opera debut as Gilda in Rigoletto, garnering praise from The New York Times: “She brought lovely stage presence and a sumptuous, penetrating voice to her performance. Ms. Yoncheva has such vocal glamour.”
Her debut album, Paris, mon amour, focuses on music of 19th-century Paris as an homage to the Belle Époque era, with arias from of the most beautiful operas set in Paris or by French composers.

Sonya Yoncheva devotes her second solo album to the music of Handel, showing another facet of her wide-ranging repertoire. Being an alumna of William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix, the Baroque era formed her musical understanding at an early stage of her career, laying the foundation for her versatile & broad-reaching repertoire. Currently praised as “the best Traviata in the world at present” (Die Welt), Sonya Yoncheva is one of today’s fastest rising opera stars. She is a regular guest at the world’s leading opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper, Berlin State Opera, Wiener Staatsoper & the Opéra de Paris. A great composer of vocal music, Handel based some of his most beautiful operas & oratories on the enchanting sensibility of the feminine voice. His heroines are strong, independent women determining their own destiny – attributes Sonya relates to in all respects. From Mar 3rd – Apr 18th, 2017 Sonya will embark on a concert tour featuring the Baroque repertoire highlighted on the Handel album release.

Gabriel Fauré considered Umberto Giordano’s Siberia to be one of the most interesting and singular works of the early 20th century. The opera’s tragic narrative follows Prince Alexis’s courtesan Stephana. She falls in love with an innocent soldier, Vassili, who is sent to Siberia for killing the Prince. Stephana gives up her life of luxury to follow him but cannot escape her past. With its intensely Russian atmosphere and passionately soaring melodies, Siberia was Giordano’s favorite among his operas. This acclaimed Fiorentino production was greeted with multiple ovations.

Passion that burns, consumes and sometimes kills – it’s the central theme of this concerto lirico, which marks the finale of a very special summer festival at the Arena. Accompanied by Plácido Domingo as conductor, they combine French repertoire (Gounod, Massenet, Bizet) with famous Italian pieces by Verdi and Puccini, like “E lucevan le stelle” from Tosca, “Un bel di vedremo” from Madama Butterfly or “Mimì?!…Speravo di trovarvi qui” from La Bohème.
