Organised jam sessions at New York’s legendary Birdland Club were broadcast twice weekly during the late ’40’s and early ’50’s and a baker’s dozen of tracks featuring the magnificent Miles Davis have been selected for this collection. The various pick-up line-ups included all the great jazz musicians of the era, and tenor sax genius Stan Getz can be heard here on several tracks beautifully complimenting Miles’ wonderful trumpet excursions. This album has been early issued on CD under the titles “Miles Davis: The Birdland Sessions” (1994), “Miles Davis: Out Of The Blue” (1997), “Miles Davis featuring Stan Getz : Birdland Days” (1991), “Miles Davis, Stan Getz: Move” (2003).

When Stan Getz and Luiz Bonfa surprised the Americans with their first samba recording they did not imagine that this was to be their biggest success together. With such titles such as “Desafinado” and “One Note Samba”, Brazilian pop music stormed the borders. So popular was the music that voices cried for more – and the VERVE producers satisfied the fans with Jazz Samba Encore. The music contained in this album delved somewhat deeper into the heart of Brazilian melodies. Bonfa and Jobim, the composers and famous guitarists, picked up their instruments and both they and their soloists, – Maria Toledo in particular proves herself a maestra of her country’s music -, proceeded to delight their fans with their seemingly effortless music-making. Although he was not Brazilian and only later became a samba expert, Stan Getz fits amazingly well into this ensemble. His full tenor voice even in the upper regions and his rippling legato are wholly characteristic of his art. A delightful sound and natural rhythm – above all, rhythm! – make this record a “must” for every party.

One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova’s finest moment, Getz/Gilberto trumped Jazz Samba by bringing two of bossa nova’s greatest innovators guitarist/singer João Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. Ever since Jazz Samba, the jazz marketplace had been flooded with bossa nova albums, and the overexposure was beginning to make the music seem like a fad. Getz/Gilberto made bossa nova a permanent part of the jazz landscape not just with its unassailable beauty, but with one of the biggest smash hit singles in jazz history “The Girl From Ipanema,” a Jobim classic sung by João’s wife, Astrud Gilberto, who had never performed outside of her own home prior to the recording session. Beyond that, most of the Jobim songs recorded here also became standards of the genre “Corcovado” (which featured another vocal by Astrud), “So Danço Samba,” “O Grande Amor,” a new version of “Desafinado.” With such uniformly brilliant material, it’s no wonder the album was such a success but, even apart from that, the musicians all play with an effortless grace that’s arguably the fullest expression of bossa nova’s dreamy romanticism ever brought to American listeners. Getz himself has never been more lyrical, and Gilberto and Jobim pull off the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of the songs with a warm, relaxed charm. This music has nearly universal appeal; it’s one of those rare jazz records about which the purist elite and the buying public are in total agreement. Beyond essential.

This live follow-up to the surprise blockbuster Getz/Gilberto was inevitable. Interestingly, the original LP release of the October 1964 Carnegie Hall concert focused on separate sets by Getz’s quartet (featuring vibist Gary Burton) and Gilberto’s trio: each is as meditative and sweetly melancholic as you’d expect.

Big Band Bossa Nova is a 1962 album by saxophonist Stan Getz with the Gary McFarland Orchestra. The album was arranged and conducted by Gary McFarland and produced by Creed Taylor for Verve Records. Bossa nova means ‘new wave’ or ‘new trend’, and this album rode that wave, making No. 13 on the Billboard album chart in 1963 in the wake of the success of Jazz Samba (1962) and prior to the release of Getz/Gilberto (1964). Sandwiched as it is between the two classic albums of the era, it sometimes gets unfairly overlooked. The piano playing of Hank Jones is particularly good while Jim Hall plays acoustic guitar in the Charlie Byrd role. Four of the tracks are written by the arranger Gary McFarland, while the other tracks come from the Brazil’s Jobim, Gilberto and Bonfa; Getz recorded Jazz Samba Encore with Jobim and Bonfa a few months later in February 1963.

Hamp and Getz is an album by vibraphonist Lionel Hampton and saxophonist Stan Getz recorded in 1955 and first released on the Norgran label.

The Billboard review published at the end of December 1955 stated: “Hampton is the stronger spirit of the two, and under his spell, Getz plays a guttier, less inhibited horn than usual.” The Allmusic review awarded the album 4½ stars, stating: “The cool tenor of Stan Getz and the extroverted vibraphonist Lionel Hampton might have seemed like an unlikely matchup but once again producer Norman Granz showed his talents at combining complementary talents… Classic music from two of the best”.

Verve Records have released a live album, recorded on November 26th 1961 at New York’s famous jazz club, Village Gate. On stage are Stan Getz and his new quartet comprising of pianist Steve Kuhn, double bass player John Neves and drummer Roy Haynes. Although the recordings were set aside after that night and had ended up in the record company’s archives, 58 years later, they have now re-emerged with flawless sound. Getz at the Gate understandably arouses much interest as the saxophonist’s artistic direction throughout the entirety of the 2 hours 20-minute concert is one that he did not pursue thereafter.

Stan Getz almost single-handedly brought the bossa nova sound to the United States and helped create an international craze thanks to a series of albums he made in the early 1960s. On these albums, Getz teamed up with Brazilian bossa nova musicians and composers, masters of the craft like Antonio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto and Gilberto’s wife, vocalist Astrud who would become world famous thanks to The Girl From Ipanema. This album, the second in the series, predates that song and was unusual for a bossa nova album of the time in that it was entirely instrumental, nonetheless very successful. Conductor Gary McFarland deserves a great deal of the credit for that success due to his magnificent big band arrangements.

Recorded: Pierce Hall, All Souls Unitarian Church, Washington D.C., February 13, 1962.

Jazz Samba is a bossa nova LP by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, released on the Verve label on April 20, 1962.
Jazz Samba was the first major bossa-nova album on the American jazz scene. It was the real start of the bossa-nova excitement in America, which peaked in the mid-1960s. Though Stan Getz was the featured star of the album, it was very strongly inspired and designed by the guitarist Charlie Byrd. They were joined by two alternating bassists —Keter Betts and Charlie’s brother, Gene (Joe) Byrd— and two drummers —Buddy Deppenschmidt and Bill Reichenbach— for the recording at All Souls Church, Unitarian in Washington, D.C. on February 13, 1962, and it was released on April 20, that year as Verve LP V6-8432.
