A rite-of-passage concept album with a young character called Travla at the centre of it, “The Circus And The Nightwhale”s 13 tracks have an autobiographical angle for the musician who says about his 30th solo release: “I love this album. It says the things I’ve been wanting to say for a very long time.”

Wolflight is Steve’s first original solo studio album since Beyond The Shrouded Horizon in 2011. Primal and orchestral, it retains the Hackett trademark as electric guitar runs right the way through with a regular sprinkling of acoustic. The concept behind it is a new unexplored chapter in the guitarist’s career.

The ten tracks take the listener through a journey in space and time looking at the different faces of the endless fight for freedom. Wandering between parallel universes, Hackett explores contemporary and ancient cultures, from Greece (Corycian Fire) to the Far East (Wolflight), the USA and Martin Luther King (Black Thunder), but also his very own childhood memories (The Wheel’s Turning) and the unresolved drama of domestic violence (Love Song to a Vampire).

An excited Steve Hackett tells us more about the record: “My new rock album Wolflight is at the ready and lying in wait. It reflects everybody’s struggle for freedom on a journey travelling through both inner and outer space. It explores sounds from as far afield as Greece, Azerbaijan, the deep American South, Sahara desert and beyond, from all our yesterdays, evoking the ancient past”.

Steve Hackett’s electric guitar plays a powerful role, whilst we also hear him on acoustic guitar, Arabian lute and twelve string, along with his strong lead vocals. Guest Musicians include long time collaborators Roger King (Keyboards & programming), Gary O’Toole (drums), Rob Townsend (sax, duduk), Nick Beggs (bass & stick) and Amanda Lehmann (harmony vocals). Malik Mansurov on tar and Sara Kovaks on didgeridoo add an extra exotic element, plus YES bassist Chris Squire plays on Love Song to a Vampire and Hugo Dagenhardt plays drums on Dust and Dreams. The innovative song writing team includes Steve Hackett, his wife Jo Hackett and also Roger King.

Recorded: Tracks 1-11 recorded and mixed by Roger King at Map Studios; Track 12 recorded and mixed by Thorvaldur B. Thorvaldsson; Interviews filmed by Paul Green Productions.

• ‘With both the Genesis Revisited tour and album I feel I’ve given people something they had really wanted for a long time’ says legendary guitarist Steve Hackett, and that certainly seemed to be the case when he released ‘Genesis Revisited II’ in October 2012. Met with a vociferous and fantastic response from fans and critics alike, it was clear that there was an appetite for these classic songs, with the album reaching the number 26 spot in the UK National Album Charts.
• The ensuing tour was met with an equally stunning reception, and on the 10th May 2013, Steve Hackett and his band performed a sold-out show at London’s legendary Hammersmith Apollo. For that night, his usual band which includes Nad Sylvan (vocals), Lee Pomeroy (bass & twelve-string), Roger King (keyboards), Gary O’Toole (drums) and Rob Townsend (saxophone, woodwind) were joined by a host of guests that had previously appeared on the studio album, to create a special show. As Steve himself remarks, ‘playing to a sold-out Hammersmith Apollo was truly a homecoming to remember and in front of such a great crowd.’
• Joining him for the rapturously received performance that evening were Nik Kershaw, John Wetton, Amanda Lehman, Steve Rothery and Jakko Jaksyzk, who all gave sublime performances on the night, providing their considerable talents on tracks like ‘The Lamia’ and ‘Afterglow’. Not only that, but the band tackled the full 23- minute progressive rock classic ‘Supper’s Ready’ as well as other fan favourites such as ‘Watcher Of The Skies’ and ‘Dance On A Volcano’. ‘A particular moment from the London show that I remember is the standing ovation to The Musical Box; I felt the team really delivered’ says Hackett, but the reality is that the evening was full of these kind of moments from start to finish, and this DVD document is proof of that.

After his much celebrated 2015 studio album, “Wolflight”, which cracked the top 40 in the UK and top 50 in Germany upon release, Steve Hackett has done something unusual for his new live release – he filmed and recorded it in Liverpool.“When InsideOut told me that I could film a gig on the British leg of the 2015 tour for release, I thought that we should do it away from London. My last three DVDs have been done at venues in the city – Shepherd’s Bush Empire (‘Fire & Ice’, 2011), Hammersmith Apollo (‘Genesis Revisited: Live At Hammersmith’, 2013) and the Royal Albert Hall (‘Genesis Revisited: Live At The Royal Albert Hall’, 2013). I felt doing it in Liverpool had a certain ring to it. This is an extraordinary city and the Philharmonic Hall is an extraordinary venue. Besides, it’s not as if Liverpool is known for having any good music – there’s never been a good band from there. Ha!” Hackett’s love for Liverpool goes back to his time with Genesis, as he attests. “We played there a few times in the ’70s, and the fans have always been very good to me there. And as a huge Beatles fans, I also know the landmarks there, such as Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. I have been on the Magical Mystery Tour. So, the city means a lot to me from that point of view as well. The Beatles set the benchmark for all of us who have followed; we take our imagination from them.”

‘Under A Mediterranean Sky’ is the first new acoustic solo album from legendary guitarist Steve Hackett, since 2008’s ‘Tribute’ – a record that saw him tackling some of the beautiful classical pieces that his guitar idols had also put their hand to. This new album however takes inspiration from Steve’s extensive travels around the Mediterranean. “A lot of acoustic ideas had been forming over the years, and it felt like the perfect time to create this album,” notes Hackett, “a time to contemplate the places we’ve visited around the Mediterranean with the kind of music which evolved from the world of imagination.” ‘Under The Mediterranean Sky’ lacks nothing of the grandiosity of Steve Hackett’s recent solo electric records, however it does give room to the stunning breadth of approach that he has to playing his acoustic guitar, reminding us once again why Steve is such a revered and respected musician.
