A night in weightlessness ! The Trio Karenine, founded in 2009, takes us on a journey into the Germanic area of the second half of the 19th century, capturing here transcriptions of Liszt’s Obermann Valley (Tristia) of Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night or Schumann’s six Canonical studies. As a tribute, a manifesto towards the medium of the piano trio, it offers us to discover magnificent rarities, whether under the pen of other composers or the creator himself.

At the point of intersection between Romanticism and modernism (Fauré); exotic accents, pastiches and neo-classicism (Tailleferre); a trio transformed into an orchestra and featuring the gentle rhythms of Basque dances (Ravel): these three trios, so close in time, all convey in very different ways the expression of the period they embody.

Winner of the ARD International Competition in 2013, Trio Karenine has been highly praised for their musical integrity and technical prowess. For this recording, they perform Schumann’s Piano Trios Nos.1 & 2. Written in a two-week period in 1847, Piano Trio No.1 is justly famous and possibly inspired by Mendelssohn’s piano trio in the same key. Composed only a few months later, Piano Trio No.2 has an immense spirit and a beautiful lucidity. Both works are given dazzling performances by this young trio.

Mirare present a recording that is common to Philippe Hersant and Benoît Menut, two composers from different generations who have known each other well for twenty-five years – an idea that came to their minds with Benoît Menut’s desire to write for the Trio Karénine a concertante work with a similar length, format and instrumentation to that of Philippe Hersant, Chant de l’isolé. Thus was Depuis le Rivage created.
Each inspired in its own way by a poem, both works come to frame a musical journey that includes a work for a string orchestra, another for a piano trio, and give voice to each group of performers interfering on its own.

Three years after the superb and much acclaimed ‘Dumky’, the Trio Karénine revisit Dvořák.
His epic Trio no.3, combining Brahmsian inspiration with strains of Mitteleuropa, is heard here alongside two ‘little’ works by Suk: the early Trio op.2, polished under the guidance of Dvořák himself, and a poignant elegy in memory of the great Czech man of letters, Zeyer.
