“Waiting in line for a melody, maybe this time I’ll be right where I’m supposed to be.”

We have been saying it in various ways over the past twenty years, but let our actions speak for us today as we present another new album to affirm that it’s truly not us, but rather you, our fans.

After completing the latest recording sessions and digesting the volume of material we had tracked, it grew increasingly clear that a single album wasn’t realistic. The collective level of enthusiasm around the majority of these tunes made us reluctant to leave much on the cutting room floor (rarely the case). And that is why today we’re elated to continue our 20th Anniversary celebration by unveiling the new, new album from Umphrey’s McGee, it’s you.

Not everyone likes surprises but we hope you don’t mind this one. #itsyou

“You’re only here for a moment, and you know that it won’t last. Another day is given back to you, don’t be so ungrateful if you know you’ll never use it at all.”

Umphrey’s McGee entered I.V. Labs Studio in Chicago in November of 2016 to record what would become the band’s eleventh full-length studio album. The result was it’s not us, the most vibrant, mature expression of the band’s growing studio prowess to date. “We decided to go in for a week, live, eat, and breathe Umphrey’s McGee,” recalls Joel, “we’re known as a strong live band, but we take so much pride in our writing. [In this album] the focus is on that writing.”

The first single “The Silent Type” is powered by a bombastic beat, funkified rhythms, fiery fretwork, and a chantable refrain, introducing it’s not us with a bright and brilliant bang. “Half Delayed” builds from airy guitar into an iridescent refrain, meanwhile, the bass strut anthemic beat production and percussive wallop of “Looks” could be the love child of Nine Inch Nails and Talking Heads. The metallic shredfest outro of “Remind Me” bleeds effortlessly into the gorgeous acoustic love song “You & You Alone.”

Set one of New Year’s Eve proper features a range of Umphrey’s tunes: look for massive improv vehicle “Ocean Billy,” prog-monster “Wizard Burial Ground,” and the debut of dance-anthem “Bad Friday,” which featured the return of Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret and Jeff Coffin. The horns resurfaced and joined the band for much of set two, including a “40’s Theme”, “Booth Love,” and the debut of the Phil Collins hit “Sussudio.” As the NYE run nears, the question always circles amongst fans, “What will the band play for the ball drop?” 2013’s “Hurt Bird Bath” did not disappoint as the energy mounted to a pinnacle at midnight . Keeping with tradition, midnight brought a heartfelt but rocking rendition of “Auld Lang Syne,” complete with confetti and fantastic balloon drop. Appropriately, “Hit It and Quit It” by Funakdelic was the first song played in 2014, all setting up for the grand finale encore, “Resolution.” Another fantastic New Years Run is in the books! Umphrey’s McGee returned to Colorado for a highly-anticipated three-night run at the Fillmore Auditorium. Wasting no time, the band took the stage to Beethoven’s “5th Symphony” which set an energetic, funk-focused groove for night one. Highlights in the first set include “Out of Order” into “Partyin’ Peeps,” along with Jake Cinninger’s keyboard cameo with Joel Cummins on “Deeper.” Set two brought fans “The Bottom Half,” featuring a lyrical stew by Brendan Bayliss that was followed by a cover of the classic “Rock The Casbah.” The segue grew into a drum solo, which found both Cinninger and Andy Farag collaborating on the percussion rig. Later, look for Brendan Bayliss utilizing a bottle of wine as a guitar slide during “Mullet (Over).” Needless to say, the band was having fun as the night came to an end with a soulful performance of “Believe the Lie.” (more…)

Umphrey’в rolled into Austin, Texas ready to rage at what has been their 4/20 destination spot for three years running: the famous Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheatre. Spirits were high as fans swarmed Red River and started flowing into the venue for the highly anticipated sold out show.
The band started the night off on fire with a stellar “Utopian Fir” sandwich. Fan favorites “In The Kitchen” and “Hurt Bird Bath” stood out as Jake Cinninger delivered with his signature guitar wizardry. Brendan Bayliss took the lead in “Loose Ends” and showcased vocal abilities that seemed to send a warm wave over the crowd. The set continued to cook as they broke into a spectacular cover of The Allman Brothers’ “Jessica”, allowing Joel Cummins to showcase his impressive piano skills. On top of it all, Waful lit up the night with an awe-inspiring array of colors that weaved through the leaves of the venue’s oak trees. “Puppet String” closed out the first set with monumental energy and deep bass lines provided by Ryan Stasik, leaving the crowd hungry for more.
The second set maintained the intensity as Umphrey’s busted out a huge “JaJunk, followed by a shredding version of “Push The Pig”. Fans were then treated to a perfect reggae mashup titled “Life During Exodus” which blended covers of Bob Marley’s “Exodus” and the Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime”. The encore revisited the reggae vibe with “FF” leading into the longest jam of the night during “Divisions” which showcased amazing percussion solos by Kris Myers and Andy Farag. (more…)

Some nights defy explanation. Umphrey’s 2014 return to Red Rocks could be summed up as such a night. Their first sold out show at the nation’s premiere amphitheatre created a palpable pre-show energy that never relented. Those in attendance clearly knew they were in for a ride.
The band stepped on the gas early and never let up. Set one started with the debut of a new original “Lucid State.” “Conduit” got the early treatment and “Ocean Billy” lit up the rocks, complete with “Gents” sandwiched neatly in the middle. Jake Cinninger unveiled a treat as he performed “End of the Road” on Jerry Garcia’s historic Travis Bean TB500 guitar. The band closed the set with Bob Seger’s “Hollywood Nights” which turned into a crowd sing along, 9500 voices strong.
“Little Gift,” from the band’s most recent album Similar Skin, set the stage for a relentless set two. Hometown favorite Dominic Lalli from Big Gigantic joined in on saxophone, adding a welcomed layer to the always reliable “Bad Friday.” A monstrous “Wappy Sprayberry” officially quelled any doubts that this show wouldn’t be one for the books. The encore gave the fans one more fulfilling taste of what they came for, as it featured UM in full stride alongside members of The Motet for a fun and upbeat cover of The Band’s “Ophelia.”
Filmed in stunning HD, including aerial drone footage of the concert, paired with crisp soundboard audio make this one of the finest concert videos from UM to date. (more…)

On night two, the band kicked things off with the aptly titled “Flamethrower” before segueing into a “Mulche’s Odyssey,” dominated by Cinninger on the fire and brimstone. “Miami Virtue” cooled things off a bit as Ryan Stasik dropped a smooth bass line, which, synced with the keyboard handiwork of Cummins, got both the band and crowd into a steady head bob. On the heels of a hefty “Plunger” sandwich, “Dump City” set up a second set that won’t soon be forgotten. The great saxophonist Joshua Redman joined the band for all of set two, making this one a rare gem in the UM catalog. Monster song after monster song interspersed with high energy improv made this one of the band’s favorite sets of the year. This one delivers. (more…)

• Umphrey’s McGee and TourGigs proudly present Rage. Riv. Repeat., a two-disc compilation of the best of the three-night run in Chicago, IL from February 20-22, 2014. Chitown faithful packed The Riv each night in anticipation of the hometown throw-down, as the band prepared a blend of rarities and fan-favorites for the crowd.

• The first disc is a mix between the first and second nights of the run. “Plunger” and “Much Obliged” featured intricate improv and the latter a vocal stew that revved the room to their feet. “Morning Song” was rendered beautifully with Brendan Bayliss on vocals, and Jake Cinninger led a clinic with his guitar craftsmanship on “The Floor” and “Syncopated Strangers.” Joel Cummins delivered note-for-note on “Kimble”, and this “Comma Later” just might be the finest ever captured on film.

• The second disc blends songs from nights two and three. Standout moments include Bayliss, Jake, and Stasik jamming in the Riv opera boxes during the opening track, “The Triple Wide.” “Hajimemashite” and “Glory” were melded together for the first time in seamless harmony. Bob Seger’s classic hit “Night Moves” got the acoustic treatment and a super-sized performance of “Der Bluten Kat” featured the collaborative UM improv fans have come to know and love. Disc two also features a slew of tunes making their TourGigs video debut, such as “Thin Air,” “Believe the Lie” and “Cherub Rock” featuring Jimmy Chamberlin of the Smashing Pumpkins. Another one for the books!
