Italia, the new album by Vanessa Benelli Mosell, will be released on September 15th in digital format (and from September 22nd on CD). 300 years of Italian piano in a program that surprises for its unusual chronological vastness: starting from the early eighteenth century of Scarlatti’s Sonata K 141 and arriving at 2015 with the piece by Ezio Bosso. There is also a tribute to a Neapolitan song, another segment of the great Italian musical heritage, with “I’ te vurria vasà” performed by the famous tenor Francesco Meli.

Following the success of her first two albums, which established Vanessa Benelli Mosell as a successful classical artist (pupil of Stockhausen and devotee to the development of classical music), her third album with Decca focusses on mainstream repertoire.

Accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Kirill Karabits, this album presents Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2, considered one of the most popular pieces for piano. Featured in several films (including The Seven Year Itch), it appears very often in concert programmes worldwide.

The concerto is coupled with one of Rachmaninov’s most popular pieces for solo piano, Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42, which traditionally combines strong virtuosic playing with deep thinking.

Vanessa continues Debussy’s world, which represents the past and the future in my artistic path, having already recorded a first Album of Debussy’s music in 2018 celebrating his 100th anniversary of death and issuing a new album of his Second book of Preludes, Children’s Corner and l’Isle Joyeuse in autumn/winter 2021. Debussy’s music invites to the contemplation as a state of mind to completely become part of his artistic performance and I consider him the father of the nowadays’ music.

Pianist Vanessa Benelli Mosell turns to the drama of Italian opera for her new album Casta Diva. Decca Classics will release the album, which assembles a collection of popular arias, overtures, and themes from “Norma,” “La Bohème,” “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” “Guillaume Tell,” “Madama Butterfly” and more in virtuosic arrangements by some of the great pianists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the arrangements come from Chopin, Wittgenstein, Liszt, Thalburg, and Ginzburg.

[R]evolution celebrates the Decca debut for Italian pianist Vanessa Benelli Mosell and is a tribute to the music of the twentieth century.

When was the last time you heard any Stockhausen? Since his death, at the end of 2007, the German avant-gardist’s star has fallen in a reverse curve to that of his French comrade, Pierre Boulez. Hardly any Stockhausen is being recorded these days, and there are few concerts where the music can be heard. So an album by a young pianist who worked with the composer in his final years is a welcome opportunity to revisit a brave old world that has virtually vanished.

And it’s not hard to see why. Stockhausen’s 8 Klavierstücke (piano pieces), written between 1952 and 1961 as the composer was making his mark, are the kind of stuff that gave the avant-garde a bad name for random plinky-plonks and unprovoked violence. Vanessa Benelli Mosell makes the eight morsels sound reasonably structured and almost musical at times, but the grim austerity of Stockhausen’s sound world simply cannot be dispelled and the ear is grateful for every silence it can grab.
