Going for the One is perhaps the most overlooked item in the Yes catalog. It marked Rick Wakeman’s return to the band after a three-year absence, and also a return to shorter song forms after the experimentalism of Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Relayer. In many ways, this disc could be seen as the follow-up to Fragile. Its five tracks still retain mystical, abstract lyrical images, and the music is grand and melodic, the vocal harmonies perfectly balanced by the stinging guitar work of Steve Howe, Wakeman’s keyboards, and the solid rhythms of Alan White and Chris Squire. The title track features Howe on steel guitar (he’s the only prog rocker who bothers with the instrument). “Turn of the Century” and the album’s single, “Wonderous Stories,” are lovely ballads the way only Yes can do them. “Parallels” is the album’s big, pompous song, so well done that in later years the band opened concerts with it. Wakeman’s stately church organ, recorded at St. Martin’s Church, Vevey, Switzerland, sets the tone for this “Roundabout”-ish track. The concluding “Awaken” is the album’s nod to the extended suite. Again, the lyrics are spacy in the extreme, but Jon Anderson and Squire are dead-on vocally, and the addition of Anderson’s harp and White’s tuned percussion round out this evocative track. (more…)

Yes have announced the release of a new live album, Topographic Drama, that was recorded during the band’s U.S. tour in 2016-17. The set arrives on Nov. 24 in double-CD and triple-vinyl formats, with sleeve artwork by longtime collaborator Roger Dean. The band’s U.S. tour featured performances of its 1980 album Drama in full, plus the first and fourth sides of 1973’s epic Tales From Topographic Oceans. Other fan favorites were played as well. The album is made up of recordings selected from 12 dates from February 2017. The lineup features Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes and Jon Davison, with Billy Sherwood replacing late bassist Chris Squire and Jay Schellen playing drums on some recordings. “Each night, Yes opened with all six songs from Drama, the band’s 10th studio album, which peaked at No.2 on the U.K. album chart,” according to the press release announcing the album. “Standouts include ‘Machine Messiah,’ ‘Tempus Fugit’ and the album’s only single, ‘Into the Lens.’ After Drama, the band shifted gears for songs from two of its best-selling albums, ‘And You And I’ from 1972’s Close to the Edge, and ‘Heart of the Sunrise’ from 1971’s Fragile.

Yes – Fragile (1971/2015) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

January 4, 2016 · by admin · in Blu-Ray Audio

Yes – Fragile (1971/2015)
Blu-Ray: MPEG-4 AVC Video 1080p, 23,976, 16:9, High Profile 4.1 -> 37.41 Gb
LPCM Audio 2.0, 24/96, 4608 kbpst / LPCM Audio 5.1, 24/96, 13824 kbps
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, 24/96 (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit)
FLAC: 2.0 Stereo | Tracks 24bit/96kHz(192) – 2,49 GB
Progressive Rock

Fragile was Yes’ breakthrough album, propelling them in a matter of weeks from a cult act to an international phenomenon; not coincidentally, it also marked the point where all of the elements of the music (and more) that would define their success for more than a decade fell into place fully formed. The science-fiction and fantasy elements that had driven the more successful songs on their preceding record, The Yes Album, were pushed much harder here, and not just in the music but in the packaging of the album: the Roger Dean-designed cover was itself a fascinating creation that seemed to relate to the music and drew the purchaser’s attention in a manner that few records since the heyday of the psychedelic era could match. Having thrown original keyboard player Tony Kaye overboard early in the sessions – principally over his refusal to accept the need for the Moog synthesizer in lieu of his preferred Hammond organ – the band welcomed Rick Wakeman into its ranks. His use of the Moog, among other instruments, coupled with an overall bolder and more aggressive style of playing, opened the way for a harder, hotter sound by the group as a whole; bassist Chris Squire sounds like he’s got his amp turned up to “12,” and Steve Howe’s electric guitars are not far behind, although the group also displayed subtlety where it was needed. The opening minute of “Roundabout,” the album opener – and the basis for the edited single that would reach number 13 on the Billboard charts and get the group onto AM radio in a way that most other prog rock outfits could only look upon with envy – was dominated by Howe’s acoustic guitar and Bill Bruford‘s drums, and only in the middle section did the band show some of what they could do with serious amperage. Elsewhere on the record, as on “South Side of the Sky,” they would sound as though they were ready to leave the ground (and the planet), between the volume and intensity of their playing. “Long Distance Runaround,” which also served as the B-side of the single, was probably the most accessible track here apart from “Roundabout,” but they were both ambitious enough to carry most listeners on to the heavier sides at the core of this long player. The solo tracks by the members were actually a necessity: they needed to get Fragile out in a hurry to cover the cost of the keyboards that Wakeman had added to the group’s sonic arsenal. But they ended up being more than filler. Each member, in effect, took a “bow” in mostly fairly serious settings, and Squire’s “The Fish” and Howe’s “Mood For a Day” pointed directly to future, more substantial projects as well as taking on a life of their own on-stage. If not exactly their peak, Fragile was as perfect a record as the group would ever make, and just as flawless in its timing as its content.

Yes – Relayer (1974/2014) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

FLAC: 2.0 Stereo | Tracks 24bit/96kHz(192) – 7,55 GB; Includes Extas | Booklet/Artwork – 49 MB

Relayer is the third in a series of remixed and expanded Yes albums. Presented in a mini vinyl replica gatefold card sleeve with booklet featuring new sleeve notes by Sid Smith, along with rare photos and archive material, the album has been remixed into stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound from the original studio masters by Steven Wilson and is fully approved by Yes. Also includes the original mix in high resolution, and bonus material.

Yes had fallen out of critical favor with Tales from Topographic Oceans, a two-record set of four songs that reviewers found indulgent. But they had not fallen out of the Top Ten, and so they had little incentive to curb their musical ambitiousness. Relayer, released 11 months after Tales, was a single-disc, three-song album, its music organized into suites that alternated abrasive, rhythmically dense instrumental sections featuring solos for the various instruments with delicate vocal and choral sections featuring poetic lyrics devoted to spiritual imagery. Such compositions seemed intended to provide an interesting musical landscape over which the listener might travel, and enough Yes fans did that to make Relayer a Top Ten, gold-selling hit, though critics continued to complain about the lack of concise, coherent song structures. Yes – The Yes Album (1971/2014) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

Yes – The Yes Album (1971/2014) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

FLAC: 2.0 Stereo | Tracks 24bit/96kHz(192) – 5,49 GB; Includes Extras | Complete Scans – 247 MB

part15 downlod link fixed!

The Yes Album is the second in a series of remixed and expanded Yes classics. The album has been mixed for 5.1 Surround Sound from the original studio masters by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and is fully approved by Yes. The Blu-Ray features 5.1 PCM Surround Sound and High Resolution Stereo mixes and in DTS-HD MA 5.1. The Blu-Ray also features the original album mix in a hi-res flat transfer from the original stereo master tape source as well as a complete alternate album running order drawn from live tracks, singles edits and an extended mix. And if that wasn’t enough, the Blu-Ray exclusive features include full album instrumental mixes, a full album needle-drop of an original UK A1/B1 vinyl pressing, additional singles edits and live tracks. Original artwork expanded with new sleeve-notes and archive material.

With a series of songs now regarded as band classics & frequently performed in concert, it takes some imagination to think of The Yes Album as a ‘difficult third album’. Yet, as the interviews conducted for the sleeve-notes for this edition make clear, the recording took place against a backdrop that was far from ideal. Despite a fine live reputation & two well-received albums, Yes had not made the commercial breakthrough to a wider audience that some of the band’s British label mates on Atlantic had achieved.

However, with the arrival of Steve Howe as guitarist, a better concept of what the band was trying to achieve in the studio with engineer/co-producer Eddie Offord & a focus on material that could be played live with the same punch as the studio recordings, The Yes Album proved to be that vital step to a much wider audience in Europe & America.

From the opening notes of “Yours is No Disgrace” to the final fade of “Perpetual Change”, the sound is of a band that is brimming with musical confidence. As Bill Bruford recalls “You gave it your best but it was a fast-moving world and you had to give more than your best.” The band may have been down to its last few pounds, the management may have been changing, the record label concerned, but there was no compromise in the studio as Yes produced the band’s first classic album, in a year where there was plenty of healthy competition for that much over-used term.

A full forty-three years on from the album’s UK chart debut, YES will be back in Europe – starting in the UK – performing a show that includes the album performed in its entirety.

This edition coincides with that tour. As with last year’s release of Close to the Edge, the CD features a completely new stereo mix, while the DVD-A features new stereo & 5.1 surround sound mixes all by Steven Wilson, a flat transfer of the original album master & a complete alternate album with tracks drawn from a mixture of singles edits, live tracks & an extended mix.

With expanded artwork & new sleeve-notes this is the definitive edition of The Yes Album and the second in a series of remixed and expanded Yes albums. (more…)

Yes – Close To The Edge (1972/2013) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

Yes – Close To The Edge (1972/2013) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]
Blu-Ray: LPCM 2.0 & 5.1 24bit/96(192)kHz and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 24bit/48kHz | 21 GB
FLAC: 2.0 Stereo | Tracks 24bit/96kHz(192) – 5,46 GB; Includes Extras | Complete Scans – 177 MB

A new edition of the progressive rock masterpiece from 1972, the first in a series of Yes albums to get the deluxe remix treatment. Featuring new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes by Steven Wilson from the original multitrack reels, a flat transfer of the original stereo mix, instrumental mixes, and other bonus material. Presented in a mini vinyl replica gatefold card sleeve with booklet featuring new sleeve notes by Sid Smith, along with rare photos and archive material, the album has been mixed for 5.1 Surround Sound from the original studio masters by Steven Wilson and is fully approved by Yes.

When Yes entered the studio with Eddie Offord to record the band’s fifth studio album in mid-1972, their second with this line-up, the band was on something of a roll. “Fragile”, the band’s previous album, had taken Yes to a new level of international popularity with Top Ten chart placement on both sides of the Atlantic & yielding a hit single in the USA with ‘Roundabout’. The band was now established in the major music markets to an extent that was, perhaps, unexpected given the complexity of the music Yes performed. But with that popularity came a confidence that the expansive material of the two previous albums could be taken a stage further with the new recording. Rather than consolidating, Yes chose to innovate.

Recorded during lengthy sessions at London’s Advision Studios, “Close to the Edge” is that rarity in recorded music, the sound of a band & its individual members writing, playing and recording at the peak of their collective abilities. The album was issued in Autumn 1972 reaching chart highs & platinum sales status of 4 in the UK, 3 in the USA & 1 in Holland, though such statistics only hint at the worldwide popularity of the album over a period of more than four decades. The three pieces of music, the title track which spanned the entire first side of the vinyl album with ‘And You And I’ & ‘Siberian Khatru’ on side two, have remained concert favourites since release, with the 2013 Yes line-up currently in the middle of a world tour stretching into the middle of next year that sees the album performed in its entirety.

The album remains the favourite among many of the band’s legion of fans, a defining recording both for the band & for the progressive rock movement. It is also one of the most successful British rock albums ever released.

Since this release of “Close to the Edge” was confirmed, the various websites dedicated to Yes, Progressive rock & high-resolution audio have been very active with discussions among fans keen to hear the new mixes & the existing material in its purest audio presentation. (more…)

“Yes” is the British progressive rock band’s eponymous debut album, released in 1969. Given the amount of psychedelic rock bands that were prevalent at the time, Yes created a surprisingly arresting and focused album that grabbed the listener’s attention. In Rolling Stone magazine, Lester Bangs said about the album, “This is the kind of album that sometimes insinuates itself into your routine with a totally unexpected thrust of musical power”. Mastered by Steve Hoffman at Stephen Marsh Studio
…Close to the Edge is pure progressive rock – thoughtful and intelligent compositions executed by the classic lineup of Chris Squire (bass, vocals); Rick Wakeman (mellotron, moog, Hammond organ, piano); Steve Howe (electric, acoustic guitars); Bill Bruford (drums and percussion); and Jon Anderson (vocals). All of the musicians in Yes are true virtuosos. The individual and group ensemble work on Close to the Edge is breathtakingly complex and the arrangements are incredible, everything flows flawlessly from one piece to the next.

There’s a spiritual influence introduced by Jon Anderson, in the music and lyrics of all three tracks on Close to the Edge. Renewal and repetition are other main themes. The album works incredibly well as a complete work that fuses music, lyrics and Roger Dean’s album cover art together in one seamless totality.
“Ranked No. 67 on the list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Albums of All Time.”
